Topic: Learn To Assess The Worst 'It Depends' Scenario A Pilot Can Face, And A New Tool To Manage And Teach It!

In an engine power loss on takeoff emergency, the pilot must do two things: 1) fly the airplane, and 2) decide. These briefing covers both, with emphasis on proper use of angle of attack to fly the plane safely in a turn-back situation, and how the TLAR app can help pilots make a critical decision: land off field or turn back?

Mike Vaccaro, FlyONSPEED.org MIKE "VAC" VACCARO - Presenter

Mike is part of the FlyONSPEED team, a non-profit flight research and engineering design group dedicated to reducing loss of control risk in EAB and GA. The team was selected as the first-place winner of the EAA’s Founder’s Innovation Award Prize in 2018, and Grand Champion in 2021 for their work. The team designs hardware conducts flight test and produces education resources for the Experimental Amateur Built community.

He is a retired USAF Lt. Colonel, F-4/F-15 pilot, Fighter Weapons School instructor, test pilot, commander and veteran of three combat deployments. He started flight instructing in GA in 1983 and is a current CFII/ME and airline pilot. He flies a specially instrumented experimental RV-4 for testing angle of attack, energy management systems and the TLAR decision app from his home airport, Ruckel Field (FL17) 5 miles east of Eglin AFB in the Florida Panhandle, where he lives with his wife Theresa.

Jeff Brown, Owyhee Aviation In an engine power loss on takeoff emergency, the pilot must do two things: 1) fly the airplane, and 2) decide. These briefing covers both, with emphasis on proper use of angle of attack to fly the plane safely in a turnback situation, and how the TLAR app can help pilots make a critical decision: land off field or turn back? 3 years ago, the EAA established a working group to examine power loss on takeoff and develop techniques and recommendations to assist instructors with teaching decision making and aircraft handling skills appropriate for use during this high risk, low probability event. Extensive research, simulator and flight test had been conducted on what is the worst “it depends” scenario a general aviation pilot may face. If a power loss occurs in a single-engine airplane without sufficient runway remaining to stop, the pilot must accomplish an off-runway landing. Depending on airplane performance and ambient conditions, a turnback to the airport or departure runway may be safer depending on pilot skill, position, aircraft performance and the suitability of terrain/obstacles off the end of the runway. Some aircraft do not have sufficient performance to allow a turnback attempt. The ability of an aircraft to turnback following power loss will vary with altitude at which power loss occurs, gross weight, density altitude, wind, and runway length. The physics of the turnback maneuver are complex, yet a decision to turn back or land ahead must be made quickly and under stress. The TLAR turnback engine re-evaluates this maneuver once per second and displays what it thinks the aircraft can do, if the pilot flies the aircraft in accordance with the set parameters and weather conditions. A preflight assessment is critical to determine if a turnback attempt is practical. The TLAR (“That Looks About Right”) IOS app is designed to assist with pre-flight planning and in-flight decision making if a power loss occurs. The briefing will walk a pilot through a successful turnback beginning with a building block approach to teach proper handling skills, pre-flight/pre-takeoff planning, use of the TLAR app, the takeoff, engine failure, TLAR displays, and techniques for piloting a turnback, including use of AoA.
